My grandfather recently passed away and bequeathed me his old truck. A couple of months after he passed, it was time to replace the registration sticker.

As I peeled the sticker from the windshield, I began to contemplate the idea that when he placed it there it had value. And then, as I peeled it off, it had no value. I held nothing and everything in my hand. I cried.

I continued to ponder this new awareness of nothing and everything existing together. Physics and Philosophy both possess a Theory of Everything. Could both of these physical and philosophical theories occur within and around me? A material and metaphysical personal framework of where the seen and unseen exist to support one another.

In a time where everything is disposable, I wonder is it really disposed of?

Questions regarding personal consumption, in a resulting refuse, lead to a proposed 30 day exploration. I began to consider and become more aware of the things that I personally consume and the discarded material left from those choices. This study has turned the magnifying glass back on myself to show the truth of personal consumption through the creation of a body of work.

A concave ceramic disc is created to contain a layered composite of ceramic materials combined with daily refuse including glass, metal, paper and plastic. Each disc will show the progression of the test methods and techniques used to produce an aesthetic and morally challenging object.

Through the collection of my daily refuse and its integration into my ceramic practices I continue to learn more about consumption, while expanding on notions of what is considered to be standard material.
